Mana Ūkaipō: Māori Student Connection, Belonging and Engagement at School

This paper describes the background, methods and key findings from a research project conducted in one Kāhui Ako (Community of Learning) city New Zealand. All 12 schools had significant numbers Indigenous Māori students whose iwi (tribal) ancestry connected to region over centuries. Using mixed approach, study investigated specific ‘across within’ school interventions that positively impacted student engagement learning. Evidence was collected by seeking views opinions students, teachers whānau (family). Interventions strategies included collaboration between across-school leaders, positive culture focused on health well-being localised curricula, substantial use te reo tikanga most schools. School principals reported limited with each other due perceived competition for enrollments, which is counter policy drivers initiative. Results indicated culturally inclusive leaders must deliberately focus motivating their futures. improving academic social outcomes students.
